How to Make Your Own Vinyl Record Clock

If you’re a music enthusiast (or know somebody who is and expects a gift from you), nothing beats a vinyl record clock. I’m a huge fan of simplicity and this clock takes the cake. Note: I chose to purchase a clock movement kit since it was inexpensive and I didn’t have any old clocks lying around to cannibalize parts from.

Here’s everything you’ll need to complete this guide:

Drill bit, 5/16″×1
Cordless drill×1
Sprayable primer×1
Spray paint×1
Clock movement kit – 1/4×1
Choose a recordChoose a record

There’s no point destroying a perfectly good record (let alone one you like), so I recommend choosing one that’s no longer playable. I chose a “Hit Explosion” record that had a pretty big gouge on one side.

Expand the record's holeExpand the record's hole

I chose a 1/4″ clock movement kit because most vinyl record holes are approximately 1/4″ in diameter. This size clock kit includes a clock movement that has a 1/4″ spindle. Using your drill and a 5/16″ drill bit, widen the record’s center hole so that the spindle will more easily fit into the record.

Attach the clock movement to the recordAttach the clock movement to the record

Push (or screw) the clock movement’s spindle through the record’s center hole. Using the supplied hardware (normally a nut and washer), secure the clock movement to the record. You can tighten the nut with your fingers — using a wrench is unnecessary and might crack the record.

Most clock movement kits come with black hands and, since most vinyl records are black, you might want to paint them. I painted my clock hands orange to match the label of the record I’m using. If you don’t feel like breaking out the spray paint, you can order a clock movement with silver or gold hands (though I’ve found the 1/4″ kits to be hard to find in these colors).

Attach the clock handsAttach the clock hands

Clock movement kits vary — I recommend checking the instructions that came with your kit to ensure that you don’t break the very fragile tiny hands.

Hang up your clockHang up your clock

The clock movement kit I ordered (which I’ve linked to at the top of this guide) has an integrated hanger. This is super useful and saves a ton of time. Now you just need to hammer a nail into the wall and voila! You’re finished!

How to Restring an Acoustic Guitar

How to Restring an Acoustic GuitarHow to Restring an Acoustic Guitar
Tyler Tyler (285)

This guide will show you how to restring most acoustic guitars. Some acoustic guitars are built slightly differently but overall these principles can be applied. This guide uses the most common style of guitar, but you can tweak some of the steps to fit your guitar.

Here’s everything you’ll need to complete this guide:

guitar string cutter×1
guitar string winder×1
acoustic guitar strings×1
Unwind the string by turning the tuner counter-clockwiseUnwind the string by turning the tuner counter-clockwise

Using your guitar string winder, being unwinding by turning the tuner on the low ‘E’ string counter-clockwise. If the guitar was strung improperly you may have to turn clockwise to unwind. For this guide I will show you how to completely remove a string before moving on to the next string.

Remove the string from the tunerRemove the string from the tuner

Once the string is completely unwound you can remove the string from the tuner.

Remove the bridge pin and pull out the stringRemove the bridge pin and pull out the string

Once the string is completely loosened from the neck, remove the corresponding bridge pin and pull out the string.

Place the new string into the proper hole in the bridgePlace the new string into the proper hole in the bridge
Place the bridge pin and pull up gently on the stringPlace the bridge pin and pull up gently on the string

Place the bridge pin into the hole and pull up slightly on the string. This should secure the string and bridge pin in place.

Place the other end of the string through the tuner holePlace the other end of the string through the tuner hole

Place it so the end of the string is facing away from the guitar. Pull the string tight enough to leave a few inches of slack in the string.

Pull the string behind the tuner then underneath the stringPull the string behind the tuner then underneath the string

As seen in the picture, this will lock the string in place once you start tightening it.

Begin winding the tunerBegin winding the tuner

Wind the tuner until you can easily pull the string and create a 2-3 inch space between the string and the body of the guitar.

Cut the excess stringCut the excess string

Using pliers or string cutters simply cut away the excess guitar string from the tuner.

Make sure to pay attention to the string sizes and place them in order. It’s sometimes difficult to tell by looking at them, but the string sizes are often written on the package.

How to Add a Magnetic Wall-Mounted Beer Bottle Opener

How to Add a Magnetic Wall-Mounted Beer Bottle OpenerHow to Add a Magnetic Wall-Mounted Beer Bottle Opener
Zach Zach (233)

Neodymium magnets — also known as rare earth magnets — are super strong and have a TON of uses. After seeing an eye-catching (albeit expensive) magnetic beer bottle opener online, I decided to make my own for 1/10 of the cost.

Here’s everything you’ll need to complete this guide:

drill×1
Wall-mounted beer bottle opener×1
Screws – Phillips×2
Neodymium magnets – 1/2×1
Mount your bottle openerMount your bottle opener

Using your drill (or a screwdriver and forearms), mount your bottle opener to the wall. I chose to use a smaller screw for the bottom hole to provide for a more flush magnet area.

Place the magnet (Option 1)Place the magnet (Option 1)

You have two options for placing the magnet. Option one is to place it directly at the bottom of the beer bottle opener, covering the lower screw. The downside is that fewer bottle caps will stick to the magnet due to space constraints. I chose this option in the interest of putting fewer holes in my (rented) wall.

Place the magnet (Option 2)Place the magnet (Option 2)

The second option is to screw a third screw into the wall about an inch below the bottle opener. There is more space for bottle caps to stick together this way.

Time for a celebratory brew.

Open the Terminal app. Using Spotlight, hit cmd + space bar and search for Terminal.

Type the following:

/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh)"

and press the return key.

To update Homebrew, run:

brew update

The update command updates Homebrew itself and fetches the newest versions of all packages (but does not automatically update the packages).

To upgrade local packages, run:

brew upgrade

The upgrade command is used to upgrade outdated (and unpinned) packages. By default, when you run brew upgrade Homebrew will first run an update, which fetches the latest versions of your installed packages. Then upgrade will actually perform the version upgrade.

If your phone is too cluttered or you just want more security, there are options you can use to help hide applications on your Android device. Most of these options are available in the native Android OS—however, it is possible to go a step further and use third-party apps.

We also have a guide on how to delete Android apps if you want to remove them entirely.

You can remove any app from your home screen by tapping and holding it. Look for a menu option to remove the app. It will remain installed on your phone, but it won’t appear on your home screen anymore. The app will still be visible and accessible from the app tray.

Some Android devices come with preinstalled applications. If you can’t remove it, you might be able to disable it.

  1. Open the App tray.
  2. Locate the app you want to hide.
  3. Tap and hold the app icon.
  4. Look for an option to Turn off or Disable the app. If the app wasn’t preinstalled, you will only see an option to uninstall it.

If you want to reduce clutter on your phone and organize your apps, you can always hide them individually in custom folders.

On the home screen, tap and hold the icon for any app. A menu will appear; choose the option to create a new folder. After choosing a name, drag and drop apps into the folder.

From within the app tray, open the menu represented by an icon with three dots in the upper-right corner. Select the option to create a new folder. You can set a name and move apps in to and out of the folder by dragging and dropping.

If these options won’t get the job done, you may want to try using a third-party app. There are programs available on the app store designed to help hide and protect apps on your Android phone. Here are a few popular ones to help you find the best option for you.

App Hider – This app lets you hide or clone apps, hide specific media, and use multiple accounts for the same application.

Calculator Vault – This app makes it possible to hide and password-protect applications under the guise of a calculator app.

How to Clean the Original Game Boy Battery Contacts and Remove Corrosion

How to Clean the Original Game Boy Battery Contacts and Remove CorrosionHow to Clean the Original Game Boy Battery Contacts and Remove Corrosion
Game Boy won’t turn on? No problem.
Zach Zach (233)
Total time: 20 minutes
Updated: June 21st, 2020

I recently bought a non-working Gameboy from eBay with the intention of hacking it to run RetroPie using a Raspberry Pi Zero. I chose a non-working Game Boy not only to reduce cost but also so that I wouldn’t have to destroy an original, perfectly fine Game Boy.

The listing stated that it suddenly stopped working — and when I received it, I noticed the battery terminals were extremely corroded, caked with a greenish residue. It seemed obvious to me that this is why it stopped working. This is an extremely common reason for these old Game Boys to not power on.

I plan on getting this one to work, keeping it, and then ordering another non-working Game Boy for my Raspberry Pi Zero emulator project (check back later as I’ll be writing that guide here on howchoo).

For this guide, I’ll show you how to clean your Game Boy’s battery terminals, hopefully restoring your Game Boy to a working order.

Watch the video, or read on below

Here’s everything you’ll need to complete this guide:

Original Game Boy×1
Old toothbrush×1
Tri-Wing Screwdriver×1
Phillips #1 Screwdriver×1
Small flathead screwdriver×1
White distilled vinegar×1 bottle
Rubbing alcohol×1 bottle
Corroded Game Boy battery contactsCorroded Game Boy battery contacts

If your terminals are covered in a blue-white or blue-green substance, then they are definitely corroded — this happens when batteries are left in the device for a long period of time.

Removing Game Boy back case using a screwdriverRemoving Game Boy back case using a screwdriver

There are six screws you need to remove in order to get the case apart. If you’re lucky, these are normal Phillips screws — but Nintendo used Y-shaped security screws on some Game Boys, which require a different bit (I’ve linked to it at the top of this guide).

Removing Game Boy ribbon cableRemoving Game Boy ribbon cable

After removing all six screws, carefully slide and disconnect the ribbon cable (pictured) that’s connecting the two halves.

There are two screws holding the logic board in and two screws holding the audio port on. Remove all 4 screws and carefully remove both boards (and the power button!) from the back case.

Removing Game Boy battery contactsRemoving Game Boy battery contacts

We’re going to remove the three battery contacts/terminals using a small flathead screwdriver so that we can clean them more easily. There are two removal contacts at the bottom of the battery compartment and a single centered one at the top of the battery compartment.

To remove these contacts, use a small flathead screwdriver to get behind the contact and then extract it using a pair of needle-nose pliers. This process is made super easy because the clips are easy to access from the back. Carefully remove the top contact and two bottom contacts.

Soaking Game Boy contacts in VinegarSoaking Game Boy contacts in Vinegar

To remove the corrosion, soak the three contacts in a small container of distilled white vinegar. You may need to scrub them slightly using an old toothbrush or your flathead screwdriver to get them squeaky clean.

Let them soak for about five minutes, rinse them with water, and then soak them in rubbing alcohol for about a minute. This will remove any impurities created by the vinegar. Finally, dry them with a paper towel.

We removed the back of our Game Boy so that we can clean the two non-removable contacts at the top of the battery compartment. Dip a bit of paper towel in some rubbing alcohol and carefully clean the two contacts that are soldered to the board.

Make sure everything is dry. Replace the contacts, put the case back together, insert the batteries, and test your Game Boy out!
