30 Coffee Drinks You Need To Know About!

From lattes to cà phê trung! We even tell you how to make them!

Since it was first discovered in Ethiopia, after a herder observed the increase in energy in his goats after eating some berries, coffee has become one of the most important commodities, spreading from the Arabian Peninsula and through the world.

As the need and demand for coffee rose over the centuries, different countries began growing their own coffee crops, which allowed for different variations in the natural flavor of the beans. This spread the consumption of coffee, encouraging different cultures to create different ways to consume the tasty bean, many of which are influenced by regional flavors and customs.

Many of the beverages you’ll see on this list are made from espresso and other ingredients. Espresso is a type of coffee. We’ve included the ingredients so you can try to make these yourself. You will need some coffee gear, however. So be sure to check our list of products coffee drinkers need, to make sure you have everything.

Did you know that the term “coffee” refers to the liquid that is extracted from the bean?

From the classic and creamy latte to the robust and heart-attack-inducing ristretto and everything in between, here are 30 coffee beverages you need to know!

Cafe latte.Cafe latte.

One of the most well known and sold beverages, the caffe latte (or latte, caffé e latte, or caffelatte, or caffellatte depending on where you are) is a classic and simple way to serve up a shot of espresso.

Simply put, a cafe latte is just a shot of espresso and steamed milk, which creates a light and creamy textured beverage.

Lattes are, at their core, really basic. Thus, many people and stores add flavors to enhance the experience (pumpkin spice, anyone?) which makes it one of the easiest beverages to customize, which people have been doing since the 17th century. Did you know that Cafe latte translates to “coffee and milk?”

The good news is that most coffee stores, chain or local, serve a version of a latte, so you’re never far from one!

Ingredients to make Cafe Latte

Espresso (2 oz.)

Steamed Milk (6-10 oz.)

Cappuccino.Cappuccino.

Another classic beverage on this list, the cappuccino is an espresso-based beverage that originated in Italy. The name for cappuccino comes from the Capuchin friars who wore dark brown habits, very similar to the color of dark brewed coffee or espresso after milk has been added.

The cappuccino is similar to the latte in that it has espresso and steamed milk, but cappuccinos also include milk foam.

Milk foam occurs when we are forcing water vapor and air into milk as we heat it, which separates the milk’s protein chain, essentially separating the milk into liquid and foam. When added to a cappuccino, the beverage becomes lighter and less creamy than a latte.

Ingredients to make a Cappuccino

Espresso (2 oz.)

Steamed Milk (6-10 oz.)

Milk Form (2 oz.)

Americano.Americano.

Sometimes called a “caffé Americano,” an Americano translates from Spanish into “American coffee” and is essentially a diluted shot of expresso. Espresso, which can be quite intense in coffee flavor, is diluted to the consistency and flavor of black coffee, making the Americano an easy way to throw back a high caffeine concentration.

The phrase Americano dates back to the 1970s. Still, it’s believed to have originated during World War II when American G.I.s in Italy would water down their espresso with hot water to create the coffee they were accustomed to. Unfortunately, this story is unconfirmed, but the Americano stands as a popular way to consume coffee.

Ingredients to make an Americano

Espresso (2 oz.)

Hot Water (4 oz.)

Cafe bombon.Cafe bombon.

Made popular in Valencia, Spain, the café bombón is believed to have been a beverage inspired by Malaysia. Condensed milk is sweeter and much thicker than regular milk, which creates a velvety beverage.

The visual aesthetic of a café bombón is as important as the 1:1 ratio of condensed milk to espresso, and it’s often served in a clear glass mug. The condensed milk is added slowly to the espresso, where the coffee-consumer can watch as the milk sinks to the bottom of the espresso, slowly lightening the coffee’s dark color.

Unlike many of the beverages on this list, café bombóns are often sold inside two different cups: the espresso glass and a little sachet of condensed milk so you can control how quickly it’s added!

Ingredients to make a Café Bombón

Espresso (1 oz.)

Condensed Milk (1 oz.)

Cortado.Cortado.

In general, espresso and coffee can be extremely acidic, which can be unpleasant to the stomach, especially if you’re new to coffee! If this sounds familiar or if you’re new to the daily practice of coffee consumption, a cortado might be the best option for you. A cortado is equal parts espresso and warmed milk.

The milk for a cortado is often steamed, but not to the point where the milk’s proteins separate, thereby creating foam (but if foam does form, don’t worry!). The steaming process doesn’t make the milk texturized like many other beverages and, instead, cuts down on the acidity and bitterness that can accompany a shot of espresso. And, any leftover foam that might form can be dumped right on top – to your preference!

Ingredients to make a Cortado

Espresso (1 oz.)

Warm Milk (1 oz.)

Foam (top to taste)

Black Eye.Black Eye.

You’ve likely heard of a red eye, but have you ever heard of a black eye? A black eye is a double shot of espresso with twice the amount of dripped coffee. No creamer is added. A black eye is a robust beverage that packs a punch of caffeine and has an intense coffee flavor, making it the perfect pick-me-up for anyone who is sleep-deprived.

Typically, black eyes have several other names (a coffee by any other name…), some of which include a shot in the dark or a depth charge or a turbo. Regardless of what you or your local cafe calls it, a black eye is one of the most intensely flavored beverages on this list.

Ingredients to make a Black Eye

Espresso (2 oz.)

Dripped Coffee (4 oz.)

Galao.Galao.

The galão is a beverage that hails from Portugal and is espresso with foamed milk, but not just an ounce or two of foamed milk. This beverage calls for three times the amount of foamed milk to espresso. Because of the amount of foamed milk, the galão is is served in a tall glass with a long-stemmed spoon on the side.

Foamed milk is light and airy and, when it’s mixed with a third of the amount of espresso, it creates a beverage that is like a lighter version of a shot of espresso with a touch of that complex velvety espresso flavor that is easier on the palate.

Ingredients to make a Galão

Espresso (2 oz.)

Foamed Milk (6oz.)

Lungo.Lungo.

The only single-ingredient beverage on this list, the lungo, is special. It’s a coffee made by brewing espresso with a higher water ratio, usually twice as much, which results in a much larger coffee.

Espresso is pulled when brewed because we have to pull water through the espresso grounds. A normal shot of espresso is brewed when 18 to 30 seconds worth of water is pulled through the grounds, filling 25 to 60 milliliters. A lungo, in contrast, will fill anywhere from 130 to 170 milliliters. That’s one big shot of espresso!

Did you know that lungo is Italian for long?

Ingredients to make a Lungo

Long Brewed Espresso (3 oz.)

Macchiato.Macchiato.

Another classic and well-known beverage, the café macchiato is a popular addition to most cafes because it pairs well with different flavors. A macchiato, which means “stained” or “spotted” in Italian, is a single shot of espresso with a small amount of foamed milk.

The term “marked coffee” is said to have come from baristas needing to show the difference to serving waiters between espresso and espresso with a dab of milk in it. The dab of milk is to soften the acidity of the espresso and make it creamy, making it delicious and easy to consume.

Did you know that Café macchiato translates to “marked coffee?”

Ingredients to make a Café Macchiato

Espresso (1 oz.)

Foamed Milk (a dash)

Cafe mocha.Cafe mocha.

A cafe mocha, or a “mochaccino” or “caffé mocha,” is a rich chocolate-flavored version of a cafe latte. Typically made with hot chocolate or, even, chocolate syrup, a traditional cafe mocha is made from a chocolate flavoring and sweetener made from cocoa powder and sugar. The former, less traditional mixture of hot chocolate will create an equally delicious cafe mocha.

Technically: a cafe mocha is hot chocolate with a shot of espresso and the topping of whipped cream is to taste. As an added treat, cafe mochas are sometimes served with Amaretto cookies!

Ingredients to make a Cafe Mocha

Espresso (2 oz.)

Hot Chocolate (4 oz.)

Whipped Cream (over the top)

Ristretto.Ristretto.

A ristretto is a short shot of highly concentrated espresso coffee, and it’s the opposite of a lungo. It packs a higher concentration of caffeine and coffee flavor, making it an ideal beverage for people who want to maximize their caffeine intake while minimizing their sipping time.

A ristretto, which translates loosely to “restrict” or “narrow,” is made when espresso is very finely ground and a small water volume is pulled through them. Because the espresso grounds are finely ground, water very slowly passes through, at around 15 seconds. This differs from classic espresso’s extraction time of 25-30 seconds.

Ingredients to make a Ristretto

Espresso (0.75 oz.)

Flat white.Flat white.

Flat whites are, on paper, simple beverages that take an incredible amount of skill to make. Consisting of just espresso with steamed milk, flat whites are a robust beverage with a creamy texture. They’re comparable to lattes, but the smaller volume with less microfoam, creating a higher coffee to milk ratio.

This ratio allows espresso to be the dominating flavor in a flat white, whereas lattes have a less robust coffee flavor. Flat whites come from Australia. The first documented mention of them is in a review of Sydney’s café Miller’s Treat in 1983. Thank you, Australia!

Ingredients to make a Flat White

Espresso (2 oz.)

Steamed Milk (4 oz.)

Affogato.Affogato.

Traditionally referred to as “affogato al caffe,” the affogato is the first coffee-based dessert on this list and consists of a single shot of espresso poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream or, more traditionally, vanilla gelato. When poured over the top of the scoop, the espresso melts the ice cream into a sweet and delicious desserty concoction.

Most restaurants and cafes in Italy consider a cafe affogato, or “affogato,” a dessert. It’s a popular option, and it can easily be improved with a shot of amaretto, Kahlua, or your other favorite dessert liquor.

Ingredients to make a Cafe Affogato

Espresso (1 oz.)

Ice Cream (1 scoop)

Cafe au lait.Cafe au lait.

Very similar to the cortado, which features espresso and warmed milk, a café au lait is French for “coffee with milk” wherein the main difference between the two beverages lies. Cortado’s feature espresso, café au lait features coffee, and the milk that’s served with it is served chilled. Since French press coffee is served hot, as most coffee is, the milk is lightly warmed or scalded.

Sometimes, because of their similarities, café au laits are served interchangeably with cafe lattes. This makes the café au lait a classic staple for most coffee connoisseurs.

Ingredients to make a Café Au Lait

French Press Coffee (3 oz.)

Scalded Milk (3 oz.)

Irish coffee.Irish coffee.

An Irish coffee is an intense drink that consists of hot coffee, sugar, a shot of your favorite Irish whiskey, and topped with a bit of cream to lighten the load, so to speak. Unlike other drinks on this list that features cream stirred into the coffee, Irish coffee is traditionally consumed through the cream.

It’s believed that Joseph Jackson first invented Irish coffee during World War II. He made the drink for his comrades to help them stay awake during the night. After the war, he traveled to his home of Donegal and brought back the Irish coffee, where it spread from there.

Ingredients to make an Irish Coffee

French Press Coffee (4 oz.)

Irish Whiskey (2 oz.)

Brown Sugar (1 tsp.)

Heavy Cream (2.5 oz.)

Cold brew.Cold brew.

You’ve likely heard of cold brew coffee, especially in the last few years since cold brew has increased in popularity, and it’s by the far the lengthiest brewing process on this list. The process of making cold brew coffee involves allowing coarsely ground beans to soak in room temperature water for anywhere from 12-24 hours.

Cold brew coffee originated in Japan, where it has been a staple and traditional method of coffee brewing for centuries. The grounds, which never come in contact with heated water, therefore produce a different chemical profile to conventional brewing methods, which gives cold brew a lower acidy content.

Ingredients to make Cold Brew coffee

Ground Coffee (1 oz.)

Water (8 oz.)

Frappe.Frappe.

Greek in origin, a frappé is an iced coffee beverage that is made from instant coffee (traditionally spray-dried Nescafé), water, sugar, and milk and it was invented in 1957 in Thessaloniki. It became a hallmark of postwar, Greek, and coffee culture, a popularity that has permeated through to today!

A “Frappuccino” is a Starbucks’ trademarked brand!

Frappés are popular today, too, and, because they’re naturally very sweet, they can be mixed with different syrups and flavors. Different toppings are often popular for Frappés, too, making this sweet and cold treat great for the summer season.

Ingredients to make a Frappé

Instand Coffee (2 tsp.)

Sugar Water (0.5 oz.)

Cold Water (3 oz.)

Coffee Foam (3 oz.)

Nitro.Nitro.

Ground Coffee 1 oz.
Water 8 oz.

Nitro cold brew coffee is a unique beverage that starts with cold brew coffee. Time-consuming, I know, but worth it if you like a thick and luxurious coffee. Once you have your cold brew base, you infuse the brew with nitrogen. Infusing coffee with nitrogen is easy and can be done by you pouring coffee into a whipped cream dispenser, which infuses the nitro for you!

The concept of infusing coffee with, well, any gas sounds crazy but it’s actually quite simple and it gives the beverage a subtle sweetness that many nitro cold brew consumers enjoy. It’s all about the mouthfeel.

Ingredients to make a Nitro Cold Brew

Ground Coffee (1 oz.)

Water (8 oz.)

Nitro (An infusion)

Mazagran.Mazagran.

Tangy and a touch more acidic than standard beverages, mazagran is an Algerian coffee that primarily and heavily features lemon juice. When you don’t have time to juice 1.5 ounces of lemon juice from the fruit itself, a faster method of preparation involves sweetened espresso being poured into a glass with ice cubes and a slice of lemon.

Supposedly, Mazagran originated from a fortress in Algiers, Algeria named, you guessed it, Mazagran where the French colonial troops consumed a drink that was coffee syrup and cold water during 1837. Occasionally it’s served with rum, which is considered a Portuguese version of the drink.

Ingredients to make a Mazagran

French Press Coffee (3 oz.)

Lemon Juice (1.5 oz.)

Brown Sugar (1 tsp.)

KaffeostKaffeost

Confused as to why there’s no coffee listed in the ingredients? Well, kaffeost, or coffee cheese is simply the practice of serving coffee with cheese, but the act of making kaffeost makes this traditional Sami treat entirely unique because you make the cheese yourself – from scratch.

If you don’t feel like making cheese from scratch—don’t worry. You can take the less traditional route and pour hot, black coffee over cheese cubes from the store. The coffee won’t be hot enough to melt the cheese cubes. Instead, the cheese will absorb the coffee and become a rich and moist little cheese sponge that tastes faintly of coffee. You can have your cheese and drink your coffee too!

Ingredients to make a Kaffeost

Whole Milk (67.5 oz.)

Heavy Cream (2 oz.)

Rennet (2 oz.)

Turkish coffee.Turkish coffee.

Traditional Türk kahvesi, or Turkish coffee, is a traditional coffee beverage prepared like many beverages on this list, but instead of filtering the coffee grounds from the final product, Türk kahvesi grounds are left in the beverage. The grounds sink to the bottom of the cup and remain there while the coffee is consumed.

Using finely ground coffee mixed with sugar and water, the beverage heated to a boil in a Turkish post called a cezve, often over an open flame. Traditional Turkish coffee is sweet, rich, and has a unique texture thanks to the grounds that settle in the bottom.

Ingredients to make a Türk Kahvesi (Turkish Coffee)

Coffee Grounds (Heaping tsp.)

Cold Water (3 oz.)

Sugar (1 tsp.)

Austrian coffee.Austrian coffee.

A classic Viennese coffee beverage, the einspänner is made with either hot coffee (or espresso, if you prefer) and cream that is whipped. You can use whipped cream from a can if that’s your preferred method, but traditional einspänner is made from freshly whipped cream that is then piled high on top of the coffee.

The whipped cream creates a fluffier and more luxurious texture when stirred in with the coffee. This beverage gets its name from a single horse-drawn carriage as the coachmen would fill their glasses to the brim with whipped cream, which would keep their coffee warm as they worked and help prevent spilling.

Ingredients to make an Einspänner

Heavy Cream (8 oz.)

Hot Coffee (45 oz.)

Sugar (To taste)

Egg coffee.Egg coffee.

Also dubbed Vietnamese egg coffee, cà phê trung involves an egg yolk beaten with sweetened condensed milk for a whopping 10 minutes to make a light and airy meringue-like substance. This substance, unique onto itself, is poured on top of hot espresso to create a flip-like coffee beverage.

Vietnamese egg coffee was first hatched in the 1940s during a milk shortage. Creative bartender Giang saw this as an opportunity to create a replacement for coffee. He used his expertise as a bartender to create a creamy replacement using eggs and sugar. Interested in trying it out? Be prepared to whip those egg yolks to perfection!

Ingredients to make a Cà Phê Trung

Espresso (12 oz.)

Egg (1 Yolk)

Sweet Condensed Milk (4 tbsp.)

Cafe de olla.Cafe de olla.

A Mexican coffee traditionally served in an earthen clay pot, café de olla, which translates into “pot coffee,” is a coffee beverage that takes on an earthy flavor thanks to the specific pot its served in. Piloncillo (or rapadura) is unrefined whole cane sugar that yields a more caramelized and natural flavor than its refined sugar sibling.

Earthenware is a porous material that, after use, tends to take on the previous flavor of the substance that sat in it previously. This coffee is commonly consumed in colder climates and rural areas.

Ingredients to make Café de Olla

Coffee (2 oz.)

Piloncillo (4-5 oz.)

Cinnamon Stick (2 in.)

Optional Aniseeds (A few)

Keto coffee.Keto coffee.

A frequently debated subject, bulletproof coffee is a high-calorie beverage that is meant to replace breakfast for people following a keto diet. In place of a dairy or non-dairy creamer, bulletproof coffee uses a high-quality fat blended into the coffee using a standard blender (any blender will due).

The butter is intended to add filling fats to the beverage and fuel the day’s start. Whether or not bulletproof coffee or butter coffee, as some people refer to it as is a beverage for you, it’s certainly a beverage for many!

Ingredients to make Bulletproof Coffee

Brewed Coffee (12 oz.)

High-Quality Fat (1 tbsp.)

Sweetener (To taste)

Charcoal coffee.Charcoal coffee.

Kopi joss is an Indonesian specialty, frequently served on roadsides and in food stalls by careful vendors who have mastered the art of kopi joss for their many patrons. But what makes kopi joss so special? You take a sizzling chunk of charcoal and drop it directly into a cup of hot black coffee.

The charcoal is carefully warmed over a bed of hot coals until it is glowing red. Then it is carefully plunked into the coffee, where it sits for a minute or until it cools down before a long-stemmed spoon removes it. Charcoal, in small doses, can be healthy for you when it’s dunked in hot coffee; it helps to neutralize the acidity of the beverage. As for the taste, many report that it has a smokey, carbon-y flavor. If you decide to try your own kopi joss, be very careful!

Try as I might, I couldn’t find a recipe for this beverage.

While this might seem like an easy coffee beverage, the cafecito, or the Cuban coffee, is a staple way to end any meal in Cuba and it’s more than just an espresso beverage. Instead of mixing sugar into the coffee itself after you top your mug off, you splash a bit of your brewed joe into a bowl and quickly whisk the two together until foam forms. Then, top your coffee with the foam.

It’s said that a well-made cafecito has a sweet crema floating over a strong coffee but, in truth, there’s crema involved because there is no dairy product involved. Some sources also reported sugar being dumped directly into the coffee grounds themselves. Regardless, a cafecito is sweet and strong.

Ingredients to make Cafecito

Espresso (2 oz.)

Sugar (4 tsp.)

Cafecito.Cafecito.

A traditional Vietnamese coffee, the ca phe sua da is made from coarsely ground dark roast coffee, Vietnamese grown, of course, that is mixed with sweetened condensed milk and a touch of sugar to subdue the acidity. A few recipes that I discovered called for the coffee grounds to have ground chicory, which is often a coffee substitute, but this would inconclusive.

A ca phe sua da is served over a few ice cubes, making it a chilled coffee and the perfect addition to any warm-weather day. Once the coffee has been drip-brewed, the coffee is then poured quickly over the ice, cooling it down to a consumable temperature and allowing the coffee itself to stop cooking in the heat.

Ingredients to make Ca Phe Sua Da

Ground Coffee (4 oz.)

Condensed Milk (0.5 oz.)

Sugar (To taste)

Ice Cubes ( To preference)

Chai.Chai.

If you want your chai tea to have an extra kick to it, a dirty chai tea latte might be the perfect beverage for you. Chai, traditionally masala chai, is a tea beverage that originates in India. Chai is made from cinnamon, clove, and black tea, and it has an aromatic and spicy scent. A chai latte is chai tea with steamed milk in it.

But what makes a dirty chai latte dirty? A shot of espresso! A dirty chai latte is a base of chai tea with a shot of espresso poured in and then topped with steamed milk. They’re spicy, creamy, and delicious.

Ingredients to make a Dirty Chai Latte

A Chai Latte

Espresso (1 shot)

Tiny latte.Tiny latte.

In Italian, a piccolo latte or a piccolo commonly refers to a small latte, but it’s much more than just a petite version of the favored latte. In fact, this single shot of espresso more closely resembles a blend of a latte and a ristretto. A little-latte-‘stretto, if you will.

A small beverage doesn’t mean you’re giving half the caffeine for the same flavors and body of a larger latte, though. In fact, in smaller quantities, the piccolo is said to pack more flavor and more body than its larger counterpart. Twice the size, double the flavor!

Ingredients to make a Piccolo Latte

Espresso (1 oz.)

Whole Milk (1.5 oz.)

30 Biggest Open-World Video Games by Map Size

Maps, maps, and more maps.
Tayler Tayler (39)
Jan 5, 2021
0

When it comes to determining the size of a video game’s map, few gaming genres compare to that of open-world video games. Self-explanatory in the title, open-world video games feature large maps that are available for exploration at any point of the game (nevermind that most open-world maps feature difficult-to-defeat enemies unless your character has leveled up from “noob” status).

Classical video games often featured a linear progression, both through map and story, which meant that gamers traveled from point A to point B to complete a single quest. While quests within an open-world game might be linear in their progression, they’ll take you all over the map, allowing you to visit and revisit locations.

Some video game publishing companies like Bethesda Softworks, for example, specialize in creating games with open-world maps, some of which are absolutely mammoth in size.

Here’s our list of the 30 Largest Open World Video Games by Map Size and, because franchises specialize in creating open-worlds with such large maps, you’ll see a few names from the same franchise (Assassin’s Creed and Elder Scrolls, for example, appear on this list several times). It’s also important to note that not all developers release the map size, and some gamers might have a different perception of a map’s actual size.

Without further adieu, here’s our list!

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim map size

14.5 Square Miles

An oldie but a goodie, Bethesda’s Skyrim boasts a map with an impressive 14.5 square miles. Ranging from the river studded tundra of Whiterun Hold in the center of the country to the snow-covered peaks and coasts in the northern Winterhold, the open-world map has something to offer every player in every region.

Since its release in 2011, Skyrim has continued to capture gamers’ minds and imaginations everywhere, particularly with the impressive list of mods that span across different consoles. In fact, many gamers mod their vanilla game to make it play like a new one. Regardless of what updates are included in the mods, for nearly a decade, Skyrim has been a fan-favorite thanks, in part, to its vast map.

I’ve amassed over 950 hours in this game over the years. That’s over a month of straight gaming! Skyrim is one of my favorite games – ever!

Breath of the Wild.Breath of the Wild.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild map size

23.7 Square Miles

Since its release in 2017, Breath of the Wild introduced a new gaming dynamic to the decades-long franchise. Released in celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary, Breath of the Wild map is a colossal one that is topographical, which means that the map indicates the elevation of different regions. Each area becomes easier to travel to once the player climbs a series of towers that allows them to fast-travel to each location.

The Legend of Zelda has many previous games, all of which had various degrees of openness in the world design, but Breath of the Wild differs in that it’s a true open-world design. Furthermore, it features several gaming elements that haven’t been featured in Legend of Zelda games previously, such as allowing players to control when Link jumps!

Oblivion.Oblivion.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion map size

25.5 Square Miles

Skyrim’s predecessor in The Elder Scrolls, Oblivion’s map covers the province of Cyrodiil, home of the Imperial race in Tamriel. Released in 2006, Oblivion’s open-world map features a wide variety of locations, from swamps in the south to the seaside port of Anvil in the west.

Oblivion’s main questline, which takes the player deep into the Planes of Oblivion, also features a dimensional location that provides even more maps for the gamer to explore. Compared to other games on this list, Oblivion might not have the most sophisticated graphics, but the sheer size of the map is nothing to frown at.

Red Dead Redemption 2.Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 map size

29 Square Miles

First released in 2018 by Rockstar Games, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the prequel to the 2010 game Red Dead Redemption and is set in the fictionalized 1899 representation of the Western, Midwestern, and Southern United States. When we say fictionalized, we mean the locations in-game represent real-life locations (Saint Denis, for example, is meant to parallel the city of New Orleans).

Many have criticized Red Dead Redemption 2 for being a slower video game in that it lacks the ability to fast travel between destinations, a feature that many games will allow players to partake in once they have discovered the destination. While some players like how immersive this makes the game feel, many have criticized how slow this makes the game. Regardless of where you stand on the fast-traveling debacle, it’s impossible to deny the sheer scope of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map size.

Dragon Age Inquisition is the third installment in the Dragon Age franchise and the game features the return to many beloved locations featured in the first game, Dragon Age Origins. Developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts, Inquisition was released in 2014 and received a wave of critical acclaim, including Game of the Year for 2014, praising the story, the impressive voice acting, the soundtrack, and more.

Inquisition is set in Thedas. It covers more geographical territory than its predecessors, allowing players to explore more of the regions and locations they received a taste of in Origins. Whereas Origins was linear in its progression and Dragon Age II featured the same map locations repeated, Inquisition threw a wrench into their standard design by offering a larger and more open map.

Grand Theft Auto V.Grand Theft Auto V.

Grand Theft Auto V map size

49 Square Miles

A game known for its vast map that is traversable by foot or by a variety of different vehicles, GTA 5’s open-world map allows players to freely explore the San Andreas fictional city of Los Santos, which is based on Los Angeles. Like many open-world video games, GTA 5 can be played either from the first or third person-perspective, which gives a much more immersive feeling to the gameplay.

GTA 5’s map and the game itself was well-received by critics and fans alike. In fact, when it was released in 2013, it quickly broke previous sales records within the gaming industry and became the fastest-selling entertainment product in history. It earned a whopping $800 million on its first day of release, followed by a staggering $1 billion in the first three days. Here’s a fact for your gaming trivia nights – GTA 5 was named Game of the Year for 2013.

Origins.Origins.

49.07 Square Miles

Ancient Egypt comes to life in this 2017 game developed by Ubisoft. The 11th game in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Assassin’s Creed Origins map is colossal and allows players to run through Egypt’s deserts, visiting historical locations such as Alexandria, Memphis, and the Pyramids of Giza.

While the map itself can be explored at any time, players are meant to follow a more linear progression, leveling up their character and gathering weapons that can handle the caliber and strength of the enemies they’ll face. Players can, however, take to their trusty steed and outrun most of the world’s enemies if they decide to explore early on in the game.

The Witcher 3.The Witcher 3.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt map size

84.50 Square Miles

A game known for its vast map and made more popular following Netflix’s release of The Witcher series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt includes vast cities, tall mountain ranges, dark forests, and dark rocky crags. Developed by CD Projekt Red, The Witcher 3 explores the Continent’s fantasy world – a fantasy world surrounded by parallel dimensions.

Don’t worry – it’s not as confusing as it sounds! The game does a nice and tidy job of wrapping up the storyline to be as concise as possible even if you haven’t played the previous games or read the books the games are based on. Many critics praised the immersiveness of the game, calling attention to the details of the open-map and the sheer size. It was a map that would take players hours to explore even when not spurred by quests.

DayZ.DayZ.

DayZ map size

89.5 Square Miles

Set in the fictional post-Soviet Republic of Chernarus, DayZ is a survival video game developed by Bohemia Interaction. After a mysterious plague turned most of the population into violent, zombie-like infected creatures, players must navigate the vast world in search of food, water, weapons, medicine, and more.

DayZ first began development back in 2012. Fans were faced with a five-year-long early access period for Windows. During this time, developers spent ample time developing the world and addressing the bugs that the players discovered. They provided many buildings that players could enter and explore, which added to the open-world sandbox gameplay.

Black Flag.Black Flag.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag map size

90.2 Square Miles

Our second Assassin’s Creed game on this list, Black Flag, features the franchise’s second-largest map! Black Flag features a fictional plot based on real-world events that continues the struggle between Assassins and Templars. The main storyline is set in the 18th century Caribbeans during the age of piracy.

Unlike previous Assassin’s Creed games, Black Flag features ship-based exploration on an open-world map that spans the West Indies. Since the game heavily emphasizes ship exploration, many of the game’s side quests involve underwater exploration, small island exploration, and everything in between.

Odyssey.Odyssey.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey map size

90.7 Square Miles

Like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, Odyssey offers the thrill of ship-based exploration as players can travel through the Peloponnesian Islands, seamlessly traveling between Athenian and Spartan territories. As players sail around on their ship, they’ll discover how big the map actually is, especially as they start exploring the many islands that dot the sea.

Like many previous Assassin’s Creed Games, Odyssey featured several DLCs that allowed players to visit fictitious locations such as the plains of Elysium, the Grecian Underworld, and Atlantis. The game was generally well-received and was nominated for Game of the Year for 2018, but God of War beat it.

ARMA 3.ARMA 3.

ARMA 3 map size

100 Square Miles

The third installation in the ARMA series, ARMA 3 is an open-world game that is a realistically based military tactical shooter released in 2013. In the futuristic mid-2030s, on the islands of Altis and Stratis in the Aegean Sea, ARMA 3 allows players to explore photo-realistic terrain and water environments.

Featuring many different types of militaristic missions, ranging from lone world missions that involved infiltrating heavily defended locations to large-scale armored operations. Throughout the game, players also can choose different objectives and weaponry that change the gameplay of the game for the players.

Fallout 76.Fallout 76.

Fallout 76 map size

120 Square Miles

While one of the more controversial games on this list, a large open-world map worth noting is that of Fallout 76. Fallout 76 pales compared to the popularity of its predecessors, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and Fallout 4, but 76 sets itself apart in that it’s Bethesda Game Studio’s first online multiplayer game.

76 is set in Appalachia and is largely based on the landscape and terrain of modern-day West Virginia. It features several real locations within the region, including the Virginia State Capitol, The Greenbrier, Woodburn Circle, and Camden Park. The game incorporates reality one step further by incorporating mutated monsters and creatures inspired by real-life West Virginian folklore.

Star Wars Galaxies.Star Wars Galaxies.

Star Wars Galaxies map size

139.8 Square Miles

One of the few MMORPGs on this list, Star Wars Galaxies was first released in 2003 and featured gameplay that allowed players to customize their avatars and explore 10 of the planets featured in the galaxy. Later on, the game expanded to include additional planets and locations, bringing the planet count up to 12. There are also 12 space zones and nearly 10 square miles of explorable space.

Sadly, the servers were shut down in 2011, just 5 days before the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic but several private emulator projects are in the early stages of development to allow fans to experience the Star Wars Galaxies universe once more.

Black Desert Online.Black Desert Online.

Black Desert Online map size

154 Square Miles

High fantasy MMORPGs are often known for their sophisticated graphics, immersive gameplay, and graphics. Black Desert Online is no exception to this rule. Developed by Korean video game developer Pearl Abyss, Black Desert Online was originally and initially only released in Asia in early 2019, and it wasn’t released to the world until 2020.

The gameplay of Black Desert Online incorporates elements of manual aiming and free movement that are often found in 3rd-person shooters. Still, the game also incorporates housing, fishing, farming, and trading elements that add to the immersive nature of the game itself. It was met with generally positive reviews and has amassed a player base of 30 million as of September 2020!

Wildlands.Wildlands.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands map size

170.2 Square Miles

The first of the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon series featured an open-world map. Ghost Recon Wildlands featured a similar setting to the original Ghost Recon, deviating from the futuristic setting introduced in Advanced Warfighter. At the time of its release in 2017, Wildlands was the largest open-world game that Ubisoft published.

Wildlands took place in the country Bolivia in July 2019 and featured a wide variety of mountains, forests, deserts, and salt flats. Praise was given particularly to the game’s shooting mechanics, visuals, and design of Bolivia, which added to the immersive aspect of the game.

Burnout Paradise.Burnout Paradise.

200 Square Miles

A 2008 open-world racing game developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts (EA), Burnout Paradise allowed players to customize and unlock their cars as they compete in several different types of races. The game was praised for its open-world gameplay that allowed players to experience speed in a way that wasn’t previously experienced in other racing games.

Burnout Paradise was meant to completely reinvent the Burnout series, said Alex Ward, creative director of the game. Ward’s goal was to create what he called “truly next-generation gameplay,” and he sought to accomplish this through the world’s development through gaming elements like day and night cycles, improved graphics, and a more immersive environment.

True Crime.True Crime.

True Crime: Streets of L.A. map size

240 Square Miles

Another oldie but a goodie, True Crime: Streets of L.A. follows the story of Nicholas Kang, an L.A. police officer who is recruited to investigate a series of bombings in Chinatown. The game takes place in L.A. and features an impressive recreation of a large part of the city, including many real-life street names, landmarks, and highways.

While not all of the locations the player can see in-game are accessible, many are only used as filler for the world’s map. Despite this, players have praised the game’s map and atmosphere, but it received many comparisons to Grand Theft Auto, but the game’s detective perspective changed the way players interacted with the game’s NPCs.

Xenoblades Chronicles.Xenoblades Chronicles.

Xenoblade Chronicles X map size

248.6 Square Miles

Set on the uncharted planet Mira, following the Earth’s destruction during an alien war, Xenoblade Chronicles X follows the few remaining humans as one of their ships crashlands on Mira. Mira, a planet with five explorable continents that offer very different atmospheres from each other.

After the player creates their highly customizable avatar, they have the option to travel to these five continents, exploring their unique atmospheres and learning more about Mira. Available for Wii U, Xenoblade Chronicles X, despite the impressive world size, was met with criticism for the storyline. Still, many players have enjoyed exploring the unique world of Mira.

Just Cause 3.Just Cause 3.

Just Cause 3 map size

400 Square Miles

Just Cause 3 was released in December of 2015 and follows the series protagonist Rico Rodrigues as he returns to his home of Medici, a fictional island country in the Mediterranean. The island is a whopping 400 square miles and allows players to dive right into the island’s exploration upon Rodriques’ arrival.

While some aspects of the game were heavily criticized, many players and critics praised the game’s open-ended gameplay and, while the size of the map was comparable to Just Cause 2, the third allowed players to explore different caverns, natural caves, and buildings that each of the map’s five different biomes offered.

Death Stranding.Death Stranding.

Death Stranding map size

525.9 Square Miles

Released specifically for Playstation in 2019, Death Stranding is the open-world action game developed by Kojima Productions and released by PlayStation 4. Set in the future United States, following a cataclysmic event that caused destructive and violent creatures to start roaming the Earth, players control courier Sam Bridges as he crosses the country with the mission of reconnecting the isolated colonies that have survived.

Death Stranding was praised and received favorably by critics who were impressed by the voice acting, the soundtrack, visuals, and atmosphere. It was nominated for several awards, including the game of the year award, but it lost to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Please Note: The full map is split into three different regions – The East, Central, and West region. The image attached is the Central region.

Ibiza.Ibiza.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 map size

618 Square Miles

Developed by Eden Games and published by Atari, Test Drive Unlimited 2 is an open-world racing video game and the 19th entry in the franchise. It features a return to the original game’s Oahu map and the new island of Ibiza. Players have the option of driving around these islands in many different cars in pursuit of the Solar Crown, the esteemed crown of the victor of the Solar Crown race.

As players compete in different competitions, they also have the option to gather money and busy houses, cars, and different clothes to customize their avatars with. The game was generally met with mixed and average reviews, but despite the mixed opinions, many could agree that the ability to drive around Oahu and Ibiza was impressive.

Please Note: The map is split into two regions, the Ibiza and the Hawaii (Oahu) map.

Final Fantasy XV.Final Fantasy XV.

Final Fantasy XV map size

786.4 Square Miles

Known for its highly fantastical landscape and setting, the Final Fantasy franchise is also known for being games with massive maps. This is particularly true for the 15th installment in the series, which features an open-world environment for characters to explore. The theme of XV is that of fantasy based on reality and, according to Hajime Tabata, the creative director for the series, many locations draw inspiration from real-world locations.

Final Fantasy XV takes place on Eos, an Earth-like world divided into four nations on two continents, both of which are visited in-game. It’s largely an arid climate similar to a desert that players can traverse on foot or via a car called the Regalia.

Asheron's Call.Asheron's Call.

Asheron’s Call map size

804.7 Square Miles

Released in 1999, Asheron’s Call is a high fantasy MMORPG developed and published by Turbine Entertainment Software. Set on the massive island continent called Dereth, the continent also features several smaller and explorable islands and archipelagos. Players can traverse this land, complete quests, and collect rare and strong loot, either playing solo or with a band of other gamers.

The servers of Asheron’s Call are as large as the map itself and were capable of hosting thousands of players at any given time, which was impressive given the sheer size of the open-world map. In December 2016, it was announced that the servers would close, and, despite the attempt of many to purchase the servers for continued use, the game closed its doors in January 2017.

The Crew.The Crew.

The Crew map size

2,000 Square Miles

If there’s anything this list has taught us, it’s that driving and race games often feature large maps, and Ubisoft Reflections The Crew is no exception to this trend. Offering an impressive open-world map that resembles a scaled-down recreation of the United States, players have the option of both single-player RPG gameplay and large-scale multiplayer elements.

The Crew was met with generally mixed reviews upon its release in 2018, but many critics praised the game’s open-world design, which features five regions, six main cities, and over thirty smaller towns and cities in the countryside. It takes 45 minutes alone in real-time to drive from coast to coast in the game!

Fuel.Fuel.

Fuel map size

5,560 Square Miles

Another racing game, Fuel, is an open-world post-apocalyptic game set in the United States after the sun has left the Earth’s surface scorched. Due to the game’s post-apocalyptic nature, players can expect to encounter extreme weather throughout their maps, such as tornadoes, sandstorms, and the occasional accelerated day to night cycles.

Fuel was praised, primarily, for its free-roaming mode, which allowed players to drive anywhere in the game without running into a loading screen, despite the drastically changing atmospheres, terrains, and weather. In fact, Fuel won an award for the largest playable area for a console game as of 2009. Guinness World Records presented the developer, Asobo Studios, with a certificate to commemorate the achievement!

Minecraft mapMinecraft map

Minecraft map size

18,641 Square Miles

Perhaps the most barebones of open-world sandbox survival games on this list, Minecraft is a crowd favorite game that allows players to traverse a blocky procedurally-generated 3D world with infinite – to an extent – terrain. Players can mine for raw materials that can be used to create tools, build bases, explore different realms, and ultimately work their way up to defeating the Ender Dragon, the game’s main antagonist.

Calculating the size of the Minecraft world is – ultimately – difficult because it is procedurally generated, but Notch, the game’s programmer and creator, broke it down like this: “The world is 30 million blocks across. A block is one square meter. 30,000,000 meters is 30,000 km. 30,000×30,000 is 900,000,000.” 900,000,000 km translates to 559234073.01 mi OR 30,000 square km is 18,641 square mi. Thanks, Notch!

Please Note: There’s no world map for Minecraft because it’s procedurally generated (or randomly generated). You see a map example that players can create in-game to help them navigate their seed (or area).

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall mapThe Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall map

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall map size

80,823 Square Miles

The second installment in The Elder Scrolls series, Daggerfall, is set in areas of High Rock, home of the High Elves, and Hammerfell, the home of the Redguards. Released in 1996, Daggerfall allows players to customize their characters in every way, ranging from their appearance to their play styles. Like all games in the series, players can complete the main quest directly or focus on completing side quests.

Daggerfall includes 15,000 cities, towns, villages, and dungeons for players to explore and collect loot from, and the full map is often compared to the size of Great Britain that the studio, Bethesda, claimed leading up to its release. The game also includes players’ ability to combine spells, effectively creating spells of their own, a feature that hasn’t been included since.

Microsoft Flight Sim.Microsoft Flight Sim.

Microsoft Flight Simulator map size

196,940,000 Square Miles

The latest game and number one on this list, Microsoft Flight Simulator is an amateur flight simulator developed for Microsoft Windows operating systems. First released in 1982 with the first Microsoft Flight Simulator, the release occurred in August 2020, making it the latest and largest game on this list! Players can pilot planes around the world, which is based on real-life ground satellite data and photorealistic graphics. It’s so real that players can fly to their homes.

So, just how big is Microsoft Flight Simulator’s map? Since it’s based on the real-life world, the size of the map can be broken down like this: the surface area is 196,940,000 square miles, land accounts for 57,510,000 square miles, and water accounts for 139,434,000 square miles, making it the largest game that we can measure on this list.

No Man's Sky.No Man's Sky.

No Man’s Sky map size

18 Quintillion Possible Planets

An absolutely mammoth exploration and survival game, No Man’s Sky allows players to visit over 18 quintillion different planets (or 18,446,744,073,709,551,616). Each planet has its own ecosystem, environment, and animals. It’s built on the four pillars of exploration, survival, combat, and trading.

It’s a procedurally generated world, which means that each game file opened will be different from the last as the game’s AI chooses from the vast collection of planets in its files and creates a world, from scratch, for the players. Because of this factor, it’s almost impossible to determine how the size translates into real-life terms. Still, it’s safe to assume that, with 18 quintillion planets to explore, this map is massive.

Please Note: The map attached indicates a system that players might encounter as they play through the game.

If you haven’t already, determine what font you want to install. Then, download the installation files and locate them on your computer.

Here are a couple of pointers to help you find the right font.

Determining a font

If you’ve found an awesome font somewhere, but you don’t know its name—then see our guide to find out what font is being used.

There are a variety of websites that offer free fonts legally. Here are just a few:

While there are many other sites with free fonts, I’d be careful with any site that does not feel legit or asks for your information.

How to Add Controllers to the Retroflag GPi for Multiplayer Action!

You’re on a trip with a buddy and your trusty GPi; why not play some Contra? Because your GPi is actually running RetroPie under the hood, this is super easy to set up.

This short guide will show you how to connect a second controller, or gamepad, to your GPi to allow a second player to join you for some two-player retro gaming action!

Here you can see my old 8BitDo SN30 — I recommend the SF30 instead since it has thumbsticks.

Without serious modification, the GPi has no externally-accessible USB data port; thus, you can’t easily use a wired USB controller.

For this reason, I recommend a Bluetooth controller — however, this assumes that you’re using the bluetooth-enabled Raspberry Pi Zero W, not the “normal” Pi Zero. The normal Zero does not support bluetooth.

Choosing a Wireless Bluetooth controller

For wireless controllers, I recommend the 8BitDo SF30. It contains a ton of buttons, has a long battery life, undetectable input lag, and is super affordable.

For a complete analysis of available RetroPie controllers and how to use them, see my RetroPie controller guide!

Connecting a Bluetooth controller

After updating your controller’s firmware, you can access Bluetooth device config in RetroPie Setup. I wrote a complete guide on adding Bluetooth controllers in RetroPie. Use that guide for step-by-step instructions on setting up your GPi Bluetooth controller.
