Close all Finder windows at once

by Zach in osx, mac, apple, finder | 1 min

As a web designer, I often find myself with a dozen or two Finder windows open after getting lost in a haze of code. Not wanting to lose my momentum, it’s nice to be able to close all of them using one keyboard combination — this guide will show you how.

Tools:

  • 1 ea Mac OS X
  • 1 ea Finder

1Press Command-Option-W

This will close all open Finder windows. To close a single Finder window, use Command-W.

Create a custom URL for a Facebook Group

by Zach in facebook | 3 min

You can create a custom URL for your Facebook group — similar to how you can with Facebook Pages.

1Access your Group Settings

Select the gear icon in the top-right of your Facebook Group and select Edit Group Settings.

2Find the Set Up Group Address button

In the Group Address section, click the Set Up Group Address button.

3Set your page URL in the popup window

Enter a name in the “[name]@groups.facebook.com” box. In addition to creating an email address that can be used to email all of your group members at once, the name you enter into this box will allow users to gain quick access to your Facebook Group. For example entering: somegroup@groups.facebook.com .. will allow users to access the group by going to: http://facebook.com/groups/somegroup/

XV Crosstrek Shift Knob Removal and Upgrade (manual transmission)

The stock Subaru 5-speed shift knob is rubbery and terrible. I decided to drop $40 on eBay for an OEM weighted leather knob. Surprisingly, the rubber OEM shift knob and upgraded leather shift knob were the same weight. Changing out the shift knob takes only a few minutes and resulted in a considerably more pleasant, controlled driving experience.

Tools:

  • 2 ea hands

Materials:

  • 1 ea Shiftknob

1Remove the shift boot

At the top of the shift boot is a small compression cuff. This cuff fits over a collar on the bottom of the shift knob. Carefully wiggle the cuff downwards and away from the shift knob. It requires very little pressure to do so.

Remove the shift boot

2Remove the old shift knob

Turn the old shift knob counter-clockwise to remove it. You will need to rotate it about a dozen times to remove it.

3Install the replacement shift knob

Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. Turn the new shift knob clockwise to install it.

Install the replacement shift knob

Note:

Do not over-tighten the shift knob or you will strip its threads. This shift knob has plastic internal threads and, since it is being threaded onto metal, it has a great potential for stripping if overtightened.

4Reattach the shift boot

Carefully slip the shift boot’s cuff onto the new shift knob’s collar. Be careful or you will rip the shift boot.

Reattach the shift boot

5Enjoy!

This process takes only a few minutes (and steps), but the difference is noticeable. I feel more control over my Subaru and don’t have that mushy, cheap shift knob feel which seems to disconnect me slightly from the transmission.

Enjoy!

How to flush dns on Mac OS X Yosemite

Flushing your dns is a very useful troubleshooting step and is necessary for some network changes to take effect. For some odd reason, Apple likes to change the command to clear the dns cache with just about every OS update, so here is the updated command.

1Open Terminal

This is located in Applications > Utilities

2Execute the following command

sudo discoveryutil udnsflushcaches

How to add a file to logrotate on Linux

If you have a log file that gets written to frequently, you will want to add it to logrotate so it doesn’t consume all of your disk space. Logrotate will rotate the log according to your specifications and delete old logs.

Tools:

  • 1 ea Linux

1Open /etc/logrotate.conf

Using your favorite editor (vim), edit /etc/logrotate.conf. vim /etc/logrotate.conf

2Add an entry for your log file

At the end of logrotate.conf, add the full path to your log file followed by open and close curly brackets. There are many options you can add like the frequency to rotate “daily/weekly/monthly” and the number of rotations to keep “rotate 2/rotate 3”. For a full list of options go to http://linuxcommand.org/man_pages/logrotate8.html. Each option gets added in between the curly brackets and on their own line.
