20 Terrible Maps To Make You Laugh and Leave You Speechless

The best of the worst to get you nowhere.

We understand the world and our position in it through maps. But what happens when maps go terribly wrong…we’re talking hilariously wrong? Well, it means that our idea of things might also be incredibly misguided.

We’ve researched the most inaccurate, terrible, bad head-scratchers of maps and had a lot of fun doing it. It’s fascinating to see how our perception of the world evolved, as cartographers found new and innovative methods to perfect map making.

Our list includes everything from inaccurate ancient maps to pointless contemporary maps. We’ve excluded from this list novelty maps made for just laughs. We wanted to find maps that actually missed that mark…like really missed the mark.

Enjoy!

If you zoom in on the map portion, you notice that ancient Babylonians put themselves at the center of a world that extended only as far as Mesopotamia. Because they were surrounded on many sides by water and mountains, we can see how they might have had this impression. And heck, we all know a few people who still believe they’re the center of the world.

Taken directly from a school planner, we’re not really sure how this map would help a student with geography! There are so many things wrong with this map that it would be impossible to list them all. The USA seems to have taken over Canada. China has changed its flag. And we can’t even begin to describe what’s happening in the Middle East!

This 6th century BC map of the world highlights the problems with creating a “world map” without the capability of traveling the vast oceans. The map includes only vague sections of Europe, Libya. Many explorers believed that if they traversed too far into the ocean, they would fall off the end of the world.

Columns of Hercules

One thing to note on the map is the marking for the “Columns of Hercules.” The Columns of Hercules (now referred to as the Rock of Gibraltar) marked the entrance to the straight of Gibraltar, separating Europe and Africa. This shows how ancient explorers would use geographical landmarks for navigation and a sense of a place’s geography.

During the 13th-16th centuries, many terribly inaccurate maps placed Jerusalem at the center of a rectangular world divided into three equal parts. This late 16th-century map by Heinrich Bunting of Germany shows the ways that religion began to shape people’s conception of their world and influence our sense of geography as well.

We do give this maps props for two things, however. First, it’s actually just a lovely artifact and picture. Second, it does include the newly discovered “America” on the bottom left corner—albeit a bit too small, as America hadn’t been fully explored yet.

Hollow Earth Theory MapHollow Earth Theory Map

It wasn’t that long ago that scientists still defended the theory that the Earth was actually a hollow object with vast caverns of mystical creatures. Oh, science! It’s one of the more fascinating mistakes, based in part on erroneous data taken from volcanoes and theories of cave structures extending all the way to the center of the Earth. The view took hold in the scientific community in the 18th century and continued until the mid-19th century. The US even commissioned an official expedition to try to explore the regions inside the Earth.

What lives in the hollow Earth?

hollow earth creaturehollow earth creature

The stories of what took place inside of the hollow parts of the Earth are many and really, really wild. Some stories involve massive giants that throw up the fire in the form of lava. Other reports speak about living, speaking trees who water human savages the way we water plants. And then there’s the creature above…whatever that thing is!

To give you an even better idea of just how substantial the Hollow Earth theory became, here’s an official map of what scientists conjectured the inside of the Earth consisted of. This was based on reports, myths, and theories based on where volcanoes were located in the world.

For its time (12th century AD), the Tabula Rogeriana was a surprisingly accurate world map. It was created by Al-Idrisi from the detailed feedback of Arab merchants who traveled the world to trade. While it’s remarkably accurate, it still shows the limitations that travel made on those seeking an accurate world view.

You might think that this map was some kind of prediction for the future of California. But, no, this was a persistent error by much of Europe throughout the early investigations of the western parts of the United States. The mistake became spread after this false map was stolen from Spain. The idea of California as an island even made its way into some literature of the time. It’s a safe bet that you’re looking at a map that’s not very accurate when you see maps with large, rounded edges. This 18th-century map of Alaska has some of the roundest edges we’ve ever seen. The map was created mostly from conjecture and false reports about the lands of Australia and Japan.

Early explorers of the region believed that Alaska connected to Asia somehow—whether at Japan as depicted in this map or via Siberia. When early explorers found that their compasses always pointed toward the North Pole, they assumed that there must be a giant magnetic land mass there. Sounds reasonable, right? And that assumption is what gives us maps like this 16th-century gem of what they hypothesized the North Pole to be—a giant magnetic island called Rupes Nigra (Latin for Black Rock).

Magnetic island

You can see in the close-up that map-makers surrounded the theoretical island on all sides by mountainous terrain. This shows that the island could not be gotten to and helped explain the Polus Articus.

While the drawing editor isn’t as robust as, say…Illustrator…when it comes to making a piece of art, you’d be surprised how much you can draw in Google Docs using the tools provided. We’ll highlight the major tools available and explain how they are used. (Oh, and don’t judge my artistic abilities, please! Just do better.)

Google Docs line tool

You can draw lines to make just about anything. You can adjust the size and color of the lines, as well. Here are the choices you have when choosing a line type in Google Docs.

  • Line – used to create straight lines with no curves
  • Arrow – used to make small or large arrows.
  • Elbow Connector – used to connect two lines with a 90-degree hinge.
  • Curved Connector – connect two lines with an adjustable curve.
  • Curve – automatically creates curved lines around clicked points.
  • Polyline – a tool to create and connect lines to make shapes.
  • Scribble – freeform drawing at its finest.

Like other editors, this allows you to insert text into your drawing that can be edited, just like editing the text in Google Docs.

Google Docs image tool

The Google Docs drawing editor allows you to insert an outside image into your drawing, and many people may only want to use this feature. You can insert images from your computer, Google Drive, or the web. Then, you can create some sweet text overlays if you wish.

Select Save and Close when you’re finished editing your drawing.

Once you’ve inserted your new drawing into your Google Doc, you have a variety of options to resize and edit the drawing.

  1. Resize the drawing – to resize the drawing, drag the image box from the corner or side to change its size.
  2. Move the drawing – to move the drawing to a different place in the Google Doc, click and drag the image box where you want it. You may need to add spacing before the image to add white space above it.
  3. Text Wrapping – text wrapping is how you want the text to function around the image. To change it quickly, select one of the wrapping options below the image or open the “Image options” menu by clicking on the three verticle dots.
  4. Detailed scaling – if you need to set a precise size and scale for the new drawing, you can do that in the “Image options” menu by clicking on the three verticle dots below the image.

Save Money While Shopping Online With a VPN

Shop without putting your IP address on full blast.

Shopping online comes with its own risks and rewards but you can take control of the experience by using a VPN. Using a VPN will add an extra layer of security and sometimes give you access to location-locked storefronts.

What is a VPN?

VPN stands for “virtual private network”. VPNs are accessible through the internet to only pre-approved users. The virtual network allows those connected to communicate as though they were sharing a local network connection.

VPNs also obscure your actual IP address with one from the VPN—this is what many shoppers want when looking for a VPN so we’ll cover this process below.

How do I use a VPN while shopping?

In this guide, we’ll not only cover how to set up a VPN for shopping but also cover ways you can use it when shopping. They can help not just add security but allow access to any region-locked shopfronts. The way you decide to use your VPN service while shopping ultimately depends on what your needs are.

VPNs do much more than hide your IP address, they change how you’re able to interact with the world of online shopping. By taking control of your presence online, you can access a range of shopfronts and add more security to your shopping experience. Here are a few examples of how a VPN can make a difference:

  • Travel – Prices offered by some travel-based websites for things like hotels, car rentals, and plane tickets will occasionally be cheaper depending on where the shopper is physically located. Changing your IP address can open up access to any regional discounts that would otherwise be locked by your current location.
  • Online Shopping – Online retailers will sometimes offer discounts to customers based on their location. Changing your IP address with a VPN will give you access to any region-based prices.
  • Security – Shopping online can be dangerous if you aren’t careful. Using a VPN will both hide your IP address and can encrypt your traffic to obscure your personal information from any would-be hackers.
VPN ServiceVPN Service

Choose a VPN service

First, we need a VPN server to connect to. You’ll need to research what provider you want to ultimately go with. Paid services tend to be the most reliable. Here are some questions to ask before choosing a VPN service.

  • How much are the service fees?
  • Is there a limit to how many devices I can use?
  • What features does the service provide?
  • Is the service compatible across multiple platforms?

If you’re not sure where to start, check out NordVPN. We’ve had the chance to review their services ourselves and know it’s capable for the purposes of this guide.

Set up your VPN service

Once you choose a platform, you’ll need to set up a VPN connection. The exact details of this process will vary depending on the VPN provider you’re using.

But in most cases, you’ll need to:

  1. Install the VPN client
  2. Create an account
  3. Choose a VPN server to connect to.

If given many options, consider the location of the server you connect to as this will be the location your machine registers as while browsing.

Connect to a VPN server

Determine the best server to connect to. Some factors to consider would be region, connection strength, and availability.

Once you choose a server connect to it and wait for confirmation that the connection has been established.

Start shopping

Now when you access online stores, your IP address will be obscured and your location will be detected by websites as your VPN server location. Changing locations is as easy as changing servers.

When you’re ready, load up an online store and get to shopping! There are several different ways you could go about using your VPN when shopping. We’ll throw in a few extra tips on how to make the most of your VPN service while shopping.

Using a VPN will encrypt your network traffic and obscure your IP address while shopping. This adds an extra layer of security while you browse through various stores. Before you connect to your VPN, double-check your current IP address. If you’re not sure how to find it, check out our guide on how to find your IP address on Windows 10. Take note of your current IP, we’ll need it to make sure the VPN is working.

Using step 2 above, connect to your VPN service and log in to a server. When the service confirms you have established a connection, check to see if your IP address has changed.

If the IP is in fact new, then you know for sure the VPN is working and it’s safe for you to shop.

Shopping internationally requires using a specific VPN server location to access the region-locked storefront you want to shop from. First, determine where the website needs you to be located in order to browse.

Once you know the required region, open your VPN service. Using step 2 above, connect to a VPN server. Make sure it’s listed in the location you need to be in order to access the store.

Access the international website or refresh the page once the VPN server connection has been established. The website should now recognize you as being located in the appropriate region to view the store.

Some websites will change prices for visitors either randomly or based on location. This is due to marketing strategies where things like split testing is used to see how different groups respond to different prices. If you want to try poking around for cheaper prices, hopping onto a VPN will trick these websites into treating you like a brand new customer.

  1. Take note of prices on specific items you want to buy. Copy the product URL.
  2. Using steps 1 – 3 above, connect to a VPN server.
  3. Try accessing the product pages using the URLs you documented from before and see if the price has changed.

If the prices aren’t changing, you can always try switching to a VPN server at a different location. However, if the price stays consistent, it may not be split and a VPN won’t change anything.

It’s common for travel-based vendors to list different prices based on the location of the person searching for things like hotels, flights, and other travel accommodations. If you want to try finding a better deal, shopping with a VPN might help.

  1. Look up travel offers and take note of the prices before you access the VPN. You’ll need a baseline to see whether or not the VPN is making a difference on the prices you’re seeing.
  2. Using step 2 above, access a VPN server.
  3. Access the website again to see if the travel prices have changed. If they haven’t, you can disconnect from your current server and try another one.

Using a VPN isn’t always a guaranteed method of finding alternative prices, but it is a useful trick to have up your sleeve that can sometimes save you money in a pinch.

How to Do a Hanging Indent in Google Docs

It’s not so hard to make those hanging indents in Google Docs.
Michael Michael (154)
Feb 16, 2021

It takes just a little bit of detective work to find out how to create a hanging indent in Google Docs. Luckily for you, we’ve saved you the time by showing you how to set up and use the hanging indent in Google Docs.

What is a hanging indent?

A hanging indent is when the next line of a paragraph receives an indent, while the first line remains flush with the left side of the page. For example:

This would be the first line that you are trying to type. The second line is indented like this. And even the third.

It’s rare when you need to use a hanging indent in Google Docs, but there are cases.

When to use a hanging indent?

Most often, you’ll use a hanging indent when you’re creating a bibliography or works cited page at the end of an essay or research paper. The sources you list in your bibliography will be in hanging indents and alphabetically listed. The standard hanging indent is 1/2 inch.

  • Go to Format.
  • Select Align & indent.
  • Choose Indentation options.

Under “Special Indent”:

  • Choose Hanging.
  • Set how much you wish to indent. (The standard indent is 0.5 inches.)

Now, your default paragraph in Google Docs will utilize a hanging indent, as opposed to a traditional one or no indent.

To change back to no indent

If you no longer need to use a hanging indent in a Google Doc, you’ll simply go back to Indentation options, change “Hanging” to “None”, and select Apply.

Getting Started With Google Workspace: Small Businesses, Remote Teams & Startups

The most functional suite of productivity tools currently available.
Michael Michael (154)
Feb 16, 2021
0

Google’s been hard at work creating an all-in-one solution for business productivity that skirts the need for having lots of secondary software for teams to communicate and get things done. The result of their effort is Google Workspace. We found that Google Workspace really shines for remote teams, small businesses, and startups.

What is Google Workspace?

Formerly known as G Suite (or spelled as G-Suite), Google Workspace is a suite of productivity tools and cloud storage available to businesses and teams globally. It’s really not that much different than what you might have known as G Suite, except in name and vision. As Google worked to grow the collaborative and integrated nature of Google Workspace, the name evolved naturally.

Google for Remote WorkersGoogle for Remote Workers

Google Workspace‘s main competitor is Microsoft Teams, which many businesses use to handle their standard productivity tools like a calendar, email, and video conferencing. And because many larger companies have integrated Teams into other aspects of what they do (ex. SAP, Citrix, etc.), it makes sense to use Teams for that compatibility.

For small teams or remote teams, however, Google Workspace is a much better option.

Why we like Google Workspace for small and remote teams

  1. It’s easy to learn. Google Workspace is a productivity suite that doesn’t require hours of training to learn. The tools like Calendar and Docs are simple and intuitive.
  2. It includes cloud-based storage. Depending on which plan your small business chooses, you can get 30 GB to 5 TB.

Google Workspace AppsGoogle Workspace Apps

Google Workspace includes a full suite of productivity tools. Here’s everything you get with any Business Account and how it’s used.

Gmail

Gmail is Google’s email service, but you probably knew that. Business accounts get guaranteed uptime, custom addresses, and extra storage for user accounts. Syncs with Apple Mail, Outlook, and Thunderbird.

Drive

Essentially, Google Drive is Google’s cloud-based storage solution for your business. You can upload and share files across your entire team or select members. Your team members can also work in Google Drive, saving their computer hard drive’s disk space.

Meet

Google Meet is Google’s video conferencing software (like Zoom or Skype). It has most of the standard features a business needs, like screen sharing and recording. The main benefit of using Google Meet is how easily it syncs with Google’s other features like Calendar and even with other productivity software like Slack.

Calendar

Google Calendar allows team members to track, add, accept, edit, and change events on a shared team calendar. Team members can create secondary calendars, as well, for specific functions. So only the marketing department, for example, will see things in the marketing calendar. Google Calendar syncs with Apple Calendar.

Docs

Think Microsoft Word but with the advantages of auto-saving to the cloud, so that no computer malfunction will cause you to lose your work. Many also prefer Google Docs to Word because its UI is a bit more user-friendly for most tasks related to word processing.

Sheets

This is Google’s version of spreadsheet or Excel. It has all the same features you might know from Excel with the added benefit of auto-saving to the cloud. And it’s actually much easier to create graphs, tables, and charts with Google Sheets.

Slides

As the name implies, this is Google’s slideshow software (a la Powerpoint). It’s simple, easy to use, and comes with various clean templates to get you started. One benefit of Google Slides is the ease of sharing it with team members who can collaborate on it.

Keep

What is Google Keep? Google Keep is a very basic note-keeping and alerts software that can be incorporated into your other tools. You create a pinboard of notes and alerts, which can be set to alert you periodically as a reminder or on a specific day. It’s very minimal at the moment, but we expect it to get better.

Sites

Google Sites is a very basic website, wiki page, or blog builder for your small business. If you’re looking to establish some web presence quickly, then this is a good option. Google also makes it easy to purchase your custom URL.

Forms

Want to do a survey or collect information that can be auto-transferred to a spreadsheet in Google Sheets? Forms is an easy-to-use and make survey/questionnaire feature that collects data from participants and can store that information in either Google Drive or Sheets.

Currents

Google Currents is Google’s version of Slack or internal communication tool and manager. It allows team members to chat with one another, create channels for collaborative work, set project deadlines, etc. Your small business may still prefer to stick with Slack, and the good news is that the Google tools work great with Slack, as well!

Productivity apps with Google WorkplaceProductivity apps with Google Workplace

At Howchoo, we use Google Workspace with Slack and have found the integration to be relatively seamless. We’re able to schedule meetings within Slack that automatically get added to our Google Calendar, for example. We can also easily share Docs and Sheets from our Google Workspace to team members in Slack.

Top productivity tools with Google Workspace integration

Tool Integration How it works
Slack All apps Calendar reminders, Doc previews, and shares, etc.
Dropbox Gmail Allows users to share in Dropbox folders through Gmail
Clockify Docs, Chrome, Calendar Can track team’s time via Chrome extension or in Calendar and create a Google Doc report
Streak Gmail Turns your Gmail into a complex CRM
Trello All apps Create Google Docs, Slides, Drawings, Sheets, and Folders directly from a Trello card
Hootsuite Drive Access your Google Drive drive files from the Hootsuite dashboard, sharing to social directly
Evernote Drive, Gmail Save notes and emails with leaving Gmail / Sync with Drive
Salesforce All apps Integrates leads, contacts, reports, and more throughout Workspace apps

If your small business is using a productivity tool not listed in the table above, then you can quickly check that it integrates with Google Workspace by visiting the tool’s website or performing a Google search. Hint: Just about every productivity tool does function with Google Workspace.

Google Workspace pricingGoogle Workspace pricing

The graphic above should give you a good sense of the different pricing structures for Google Workspace. It’s important to note that all Google Workspace options come with access to all of the productivity tools. The main differences are in terms of storage space and added security features. We’ll highlight each of these below to give you a sense of what’s right for your business.

We recommend that most small businesses will want to start with the “Business Standard” account.

Small business storage space

The storage space Google Workspace provides is per user, so each user is given an allotment of cloud-based storage for their account. The business starter account only gives a user about 30 GB, which, to be honest, is not a lot of storage and will run out rather quickly—especially if your team members are using photographs, graphics, or anything else that takes up a lot of space. We recommend that most small businesses will want to start with the “Business Standard” account, which provides 2 TB of storage (a HUGE jump up from 30 GB).

Small business security options

ALL Google Workspace accounts come with enough security features to make you feel relatively secure with your data. Things like 2-factor authentication and security alerts are standard. If your small business is handling sensitive material or sending sensitive communications, you’ll want to consider the Business Plus or Enterprise plans, which come with bonus security features like Data Loss Prevention, S/MIME encryption, and Context-aware Access, and Secure LDAP.

Google Admin WorkspaceGoogle Admin Workspace

We’ll walk you through the first steps to get your team started with Google Workspace.

Setting up your Google Workspace account

By default, Google will ask you a series of questions to help you determine which of their business accounts you need for your small business or team. You might already know, of course, but this activity might help you think about your business’s needs, which isn’t a bad thing.

Next, you’ll set up your custom email address for yourself and your team members. You can also create a standard business email account and add individual team members later.

Using a Google Workspace partner to help you get setup

If you and your team aren’t the most tech-savvy group and need some help getting set up, then Google offers the services of an official Google Workspace IT partner to help you out.

Migrating your existing email accounts and webpage(s)

You can bring your old email accounts and custom URLs to Google Workspace. As part of the setup process, Google will ask you to enter your URL and previous email address to bring over.

Google Admin

Once you’ve set up your account, you’ll have access to your Google Admin page, where you do things like:

  • Add team members
  • Manage your billing information
  • Install third-party apps
  • View reports
  • Contact support
  • And more

We like how easy it is to add new team members and integrate the reports with our other productivity tools. It’s also a great snapshot of how much a small company or business is growing.

basecamp office slackbasecamp office slack

Honestly, in terms of the robustness offered by Google Workspace, the only real competitor at the moment is Microsoft 365 for Business, which runs about the same in terms of price and offerings. It’s obviously a good choice if your small business plans to use mostly Windows-based computers and laptops. It’s also a better choice for mid-range businesses running things like SAP.

Slack has been drawing many away from Google Currents, which is part of the Workspace package. Currents still has some catching up to do in terms of integration and user-interfacing. What we’ve found, however, is that using Slack in tandem with Google Workspace proves to be a great option for most remote teams and small businesses.

Lastly, we want to mention Basecamp, a nonprofit that can serve as a great internal communication manager. Basecamp works best for small teams (less than 20) and really shines as a way to connect remote teams. It has features like internal chatting, messaging, data storage, calendar, reminders, due dates, etc. It does not come with a custom email address, however, or video chat capability. For those features, you’ll still want a Google Workspace account.

Getting Started With Google Workspace: Small Businesses, Remote Teams & Startups

The most functional suite of productivity tools currently available.
Michael Michael (154)

  3. Comes with security features for your team and data. Google protects your team’s data with enhanced security features.
  4. It includes a custom business email. Your small business will have its own email address, and you can add team members.

Hootsuite Drive Access your Google Drive drive files from the Hootsuite dashboard, sharing to social directly
Evernote Drive, Gmail Save notes and emails with leaving Gmail / Sync with Drive

If your small business is using a productivity tool not listed in the table above, then you can quickly check that it integrates with Google Workspace by visiting the tool’s website or performing a Google search. Hint: Just about every productivity tool does function with Google Workspace.

  3. Comes with security features for your team and data. Google protects your team’s data with enhanced security features.
  4. It includes a custom business email. Your small business will have its own email address, and you can add team members.
  5. You get more for your money than with Microsoft Teams. You get more storage and no annual commitment.
  6. Free Trial! You get to try it for 14 days with no commitment.

Best Ever Chocolate Coffee Mug Cake

Make this decadent chocolate mug cake with a hint of coffee flavor!
Feb 15, 2021
3 minutes

Mug cakes are my go-to cure for a sweet tooth, mostly when I’m short on time or ingredients. They’re easy, quick, and involve a small number of ingredients and tools. There’s no need to make a big cake you’ll eat too much of over the next week.

For people who live alone, mug cakes are easy and avoid food waste. For a family, each person can make their own mug cake, try different flavors, and use different ingredients. They’re incredibly versatile. Cakes, cookies, and brownies can all be made into mug cakes. I’ve made every kind of mug cake that I could dream up: snickerdoodle cookie mug cake, raspberry, and white chocolate mug cake, banana bread mug cake, and funfetti mug cake, but my favorite mug cakes always involve chocolate.

This recipe is for my all-time favorite mug cake because of the richness provided by the addition of coffee and dark chocolate chips.

Kitchen tools
1 eaMugMug
1 eaHand mixerHand mixer
Ingredients
1/4 cupsugar
1/4 cupFlour, all purpose
2 tbspCocoa PowderCocoa Powder
1/4 tspBaking PowderBaking Powder
1 dashSalt
1 1/2 tbspmelted butter or oil
2 tbspbrewed coffee
1 tbspMilk of your choice
1/4 tspAlmond Extract
2 tbspDark Chocolate Chips

This step is optional, but I highly recommend it. The cake does tend to stick because of the amount of sugar used. Just like greasing a cake pan, this step prevents the cake from sticking. It also makes for easy cleanup. The few times I have forgotten to grease my mug before cooking, I have ended up with some serious sticking and a lot more cleanup.

To Prep
  • Spray a small amount of your favorite cooking spray into the mug
  • Using a paper towel, soak up excess oil and spread the oil along the entirety of the inside of the mug

When combining the ingredients, make sure to measure carefully. Even though this cake is being cooked in the microwave, it still requires the scientific approach of baking. Making sure to have the right amounts of baking powder, wet ingredients, dry ingredients, and not overdoing it with the number of additional ingredients, is crucial to getting a cake-like texture.

Combine

  • Add all dry ingredients to your mug and mix them
  • Before adding any wet ingredients, make sure you don’t have any major lumps in the mixture
  • Add all wet ingredients to your mug and mix them until combined
  • Add additional ingredients and fold them in
Dry ingredients
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • dash salt
Wet ingredients
  • 1 1/2 tbsp oil or melted butter- I think butter adds more flavor, but canola or coconut oil can be used also
  • 2 to 3 tbsp coffee- only use strong coffee
  • 1 tbsp milk (optional)- 3 tbsp of wet ingredients is all that is needed. You can opt for 2 tbsp of coffee and 1 tbsp of milk, or 3 tbsp of milk.
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract- works well with chocolate and adds a more complex flavor than vanilla
Additional ingredients
  • 1 to 2 tbsp of dark chocolate chips

Here is where the magic happens! In just over a minute, you will have a silky, decadent chocolate mug cake that will rival all other mug cakes.

Note that cooking times may vary depending on your microwave. If the wattage of your microwave is 1200 like mine is. I recommend 70 to 80 seconds. If you are feeling unsure of the time, watch over it a bit. If your wattage is lower, increase the time. If the wattage is higher, reduce the time. Get to know your microwave to decide the best time for you!

Cook

  • Cook for 70 to 80 seconds.
  • While the mug cake is cooking, add frosting ingredients to a bowl and mix until smooth and silky (avoid overmixing).
  • Let the mug cake cool about a minute before adding frosting, and enjoy!
Frosting ingredients (optional)

This mug cake is delicious on its own, but if you want to amp it up a bit, this chocolate coffee frosting is silky and delicious.

  • 1/2 tbsp softened butter
  • 3 to 3 1/2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 to 2 tsp of cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp of vanilla
  • 1 tsp of coffee

To make the frosting, combine the ingredients and whisk with a hand mixer (I use my whisk attachment but you can use the standard attachments).

Mug cakes are a great alternative to baking (not that I don’t love baking). Not only are they easy, but they can be a great alternative when you’ve run out of eggs, don’t have enough ingredients for an entire cake, or want to avoid over-indulging when it’s just you in the house.

What I like about mug cakes isn’t just that they are quick and easy. If made correctly, they don’t compromise on taste or texture. They are customizable and just as tasty as any three-lay cake I have ever had. If you pay close attention to measurements, making sure to have the right ratio of wet to dry ingredients and baking powder, the texture won’t disappoint.

This mug cake, or mug brownie rather, is one of my favorite go-to midnight snacks. I have a love for all things Rocky Road flavored, and it was an invention of mine during a midnight craving not too long ago. I love brownies, but they take forever to bake, and I don’t always want an entire pan of brownies hanging out on my kitchen counter. This more compact mug cake version of a brownie is rich, fudgy, delicious, and can be made in under 3 minutes!

This step is optional, but I would highly recommend it. With all the brown sugar in this brownie, it’s bound to stick and make for a messy mug during cleanup. Just like you would grease your pan for baking a brownie, grease your mug quickly before cooking. It will make clean up much easier!

To Prep

  • Spray a small amount of your favorite cooking spray into the mug
  • Using a paper towel, soak up excess oil and spread the oil along the entirety of the inside of the mug

It’s important to be accurate with the measurements of mug cake ingredients. Even though we aren’t baking them, this part is still crucial. Altering the ingredients too drastically can change the texture of the brownie, as well as over-all the flavor. If you are preferring more marshmallows or chocolate chips, add them to the top of the mug cake at the last 10 to 15 seconds of cooking.

Combine

  • Add all dry ingredients to your mug and mix them.
  • Make sure there are no major lumps before adding wet ingredients.
  • Add all wet ingredients to your mug and mix them.
  • Add additional ingredients and fold them in.
Dry ingredients
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • dash salt
Wet ingredients
  • 1 1/2 tbsp oil or melted butter (melted butter is my preferred and I think it creates a more fudgy texture, but oil is the standard)
  • 3 1/2 tbsp milk
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract- works well with chocolate and adds a more complex flavor than vanilla
Additional ingredients
  • 1 to 2 tsp of dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp of mini marshmallows
  • 1 tsp chopped walnuts
Tip
  • If you don’t have any walnuts, or you have a nut allergy, try substituting them for crushed graham crackers. Voila! You have a smores brownie instead.

Can you believe that in just 70 seconds, you can have a delicious chocolate brownie? Well, you can. Make sure not to cook the brownie too long, or it will end up dry and lose its fudgy texture.

Note that cooking times may vary depending on your microwave. If the wattage of your microwave is 1200 like mine is. I recommend 70 to 75 seconds. If you are feeling unsure of the time, watch over it a bit. If your wattage is lower, increase the time. If the wattage is higher, reduce the time. Get to know your microwave to decide the best time for you!

Cook

  • Cook for 70 to 75 seconds.
  • Let the mug cake cool about a minute after cooking, and enjoy!

Tip

  • Top it with one scoop of rocky road ice cream to really lean into the rocky road flavor. If you want to stay classic, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Mug cakes are my go-to cure for a sweet tooth, mostly when I’m short on time or ingredients. They’re easy, quick, and involve a small number of ingredients and tools.
