Each week, check out my latest article for the new hit game or add-on released for free from the Epic Games Store! This week it’s the incredible Tomb Raider trilogy — all released for free as an Epic Games exclusive treat for the holiday season.
This wraps up the fifteen days of free games holiday promotion that Epic Games has been running, but don’t be fooled into thinking the holiday fun is over. Epic is still running its amazing $10 off any game in their store deal, which makes this the perfect time to pick up those games you’ve been eying that never quite seem to be on sale elsewhere. That $10 off automatically applies to any purchase you make (as long as the game is at least $14.99 after all other discounts are applied). I’ve picked up some pretty sweet deals in the last few days because of that!
Tomb Raider is a critically acclaimed action adventure that explores the intense and gritty origin story of Lara Croft and her ascent from a young woman to a hardened survivor. Armed only with raw instincts and the ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, Lara must fight to unravel the dark history of a forgotten island to escape its relentless hold. The Game of the Year edition includes the Tomb of the Lost Adventurer, 6 single player outfits for Lara and 4 characters.
Tomb Raider rightfully reignited the story of Laura Croft, updating the story and themes while staying true to the earlier games in the series. It offered a deep storyline, engaging characters, and a superb mixture of high-pace action with the sort of puzzle solving that makes the Tomb Raider franchise what it is. Though criticisms can definitely be leveled against the game where its story and gameplay elements mix, it’s still a superb title.
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration includes the base game and Season Pass featuring all-new content. Explore Croft Manor in the new “Blood Ties” story, then defend it against a zombie invasion in “Lara’s Nightmare”.
Join Laura Croft as she uncovers the secrets of the ancients and contends with a powerful global cult called Trinity. Haunted by her father’s disappearance and determined to seek his trail to the very ends of the Earth, Laura must confront a threat greater than any she could have imagined.
A solid game for its time, following up on the success of Tomb Raider, I think this is definitely an action-adventure you’ll end up loving. Between puzzles, strategic combat, and some killer visual effects, Rise of the Tomb Raider offers everything you need.
As Lara Croft races to save the world from a Maya apocalypse, she must become the Tomb Raider she is destined to be. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition experience the final chapter of Lara’s origin as she is forged into the Tomb Raider she is destined to be. Combining the base game, all seven DLC challenge tombs, as well as all downloadable weapons, outfits, and skills, Shadow of the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition is the ultimate way to experience Lara’s defining moment.
In some ways the strongest of the reboot trilogy, Shadow of the Tomb Raider features all the great gameplay elements we’ve come to love from the previous two titles. Immersive puzzles, new challenge tombs that provide access to new resources and complete side-quests, and the same epic combat that the previous titles introduced. The story isn’t as strong as the other titles, but there’s still a lot here to have fun with, which is what Tomb Raider has always been about.
The Epic Games Store has been around for a while, the lesser-known alternative to Steam, the nearly-ubiquitous platform for game purchases since it launched in 2003. But, where Steam originally existed and launched to promote Valve games, Epic Games Store launched in 2018 and quickly rose to success on the Fortnight franchise. At the time of Epic’s launch, Steam took a dramatic 30% cut from the sales of video games through their platform! This hurt both game designers and users, just wasn’t very nice. But the folks behind Epic realized something excellent: they could take a much lower cut and still have a profitable business. This led them to fast domination of the indie market, as small publishers flocked to the far better terms offered by Epic.
Epic Games Store offers some seriously incredible discounts on a regular basis, in addition to all the normal discounts one would expect on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the usual holidays. But the most exciting is their weekly free game or add-on, which simply harpoons all competitors.
When I first heard about this free game, I thought that can’t be real. They must only offer tiny indie games. Not at all, dear reader. Not. At. All. Epic frequently lists unbelievable A-lister games on their weekly deal, as well as sometimes offer two free games instead of one. In addition, just because a studio is smaller doesn’t mean the games it makes aren’t impressive. I’ve picked up some of my favorite new games, for free, from this platform, and most of them have been made by smaller studios (or as side-projects for teams from big studios).
There’s no doubt that, when it comes to being awesome Epic Games easily blows Steam out of the water.

Traveling long distances in Minecraft can be tiresome (both in real life and the game). Thankfully, there are ways to move around faster through the Overworld! Whether you’re a skilled player or not, in the early game of Minecraft you usually don’t have elytra to fly around. But you can have horses!
Whether you want to gather leather like YouTuber Smallishbeans:
Or maybe you just want a companion on your adventure? Either way, here’s our guide on how to tame and breed horses in Minecraft!
Fun Fact: This method will also work for donkeys!
Horses naturally spawn around the Overworld in the following biomes:
Make sure you have a spot to keep the horses, since they will wander even if tamed.
Both horses and donkeys must be tamed in order to breed or even ride. In order to tame a horse, simply right click one with an empty hand. You’ll now be mounted upon the horse until it bucks you off. Repeat this as many times as it takes. You’ll know you’ve tamed the horse or donkey when hearts appear on the screen.
Taming depends all on the horse’s temper. Every horse begins with a temper between 1 and 100 and an assigned random taming threshold. Each time a player is bucked off earns 5 temper and once it reaches past that taming threshold, the horse is tamed.
Now you can add a saddle and armor! However, there are a few more supplies needed before breeding.
In order to activate love mode (aka breeding) you must feed two horses (or donkeys) either a golden carrot or a golden apple. Both can be crafted or looted!
You can craft a golden apple with 8 gold ingots and 1 apple.
Golden apples also generate naturally in chests throughout the Overworld and Nether. The best places to find a golden apple are in igloos, mineshafts, and desert temples.
You can craft a golden carrot with 8 gold nuggets and 1 carrot.
Golden carrots can be looted from chests in bastion remnants and ruined portals. Bastion remnants have the highest chance of spawning 6-17 golden carrots in a chest.
Mojang call breeding “love mode”. Is that important information? Not really, but it’s still fun to know.
Once you have the above supplies, simply feed the golden carrots or apples to a pair of horses. They’ll enter love mode and produce a foal. Typically, the foal has the color or markings of one of its parents, but there is a ~29% chance for a random variation in color/markings.
If a horse and donkey are bred together, they create a mule foal. Mules can’t breed, but you at least will get an achievement for it!
Minecraft has plenty of potions and magic to satisfy its players. However, not many really delve into potion brewing like we did.

The first few days of Minecraft are the most stressful, which means a good starter house is required to keep you safe from mobs and the elements (and have a place to spawn back to in the event of an unfortunate interaction with a skeleton or zombie). What defines a good starter house? Simplistic Design: Regardless of building skill level, large builds are realistic to starter houses. They should take a few days, at most, and even a new player should be able to build it. Attainable Materials: The materials need to be easy to gather or find, which is why most builds are made of stone and wood. Includes the Essentials: What good is a house if it doesn’t have a bed? It should also have space for farming and storage to help you survive long enough to get better tools and experience. What makes up a cottagecore style house? In Minecraft, there are blocks for all types of builds. Cottagecore starter house designs include a lot of stone, wood, and (of course) greenery. They’re great for early game in Minecraft because their resources are easily found in the Overworld. For those who have fallen down a TikTok cottagecore hole or simply just want a cozy cabin to escape to, cottagecore and fairycore Minecraft builds are meant for you. However, that doesn’t mean concrete, sandstone, or even terracotta are out of the running. The following builds vary in shape and location so that anyone looking for a cottagecore starter base can build it! From desert to flower forest (to even a mushroom), this list features cottagecore starter homes for all skill levels!

While shaders make Minecraft look pleasing, resource packs are an additional way to add specific aesthetics or themes to your gameplay.
Whether you want to immerse yourself in a medieval adventure, be able to see through clear glass, or have a dog shelter, resource packs make anything believable. We’ve already covered the best and favorite resource packs overall, but 1.18 has brought about new landscapes to look upon (or down if you’re on a tall mountain).
While many use both terms to mean the same thing, there is a fundamental difference between the two. A texture pack is used for 1.6.1 and earlier versions of the game, and they only changed the in-game textures. Resource packs were added in after 1.6.1, and allow players to change sounds, music, and particle effects. They also can modify blocks, items, and entity textures.
If you’re interested in learning how to add resource packs to Minecraft, read our guides on how to add them through the Minecraft Launcher or CurseForge.
Let’s get into the top ten resource packs for _Minecraft_1.18, Caves & Cliffs Part 2!
If you’d like the surrounding flora to feel just as realistic as the new terrain, try out Motschen’s Better Leaves! This resource pack adds 3D layers to leaf blocks to make them more bushy and natural. Plus, it’s compatible with a multitude of mods!
How can Minecraft be better? By having more dog (aka wolf) variety! This resource pack adds 32 breed textures to the game. Plus, each breed has a variety set, so you can build up a whole army of corgis if you wanted to. There’s even three Nether breeds! You can use name tags to give a dog the breed you really want.
Inspired by old school RPGs, Misa’s Realistic has a semi-realistic vibe with a dash of medieval. Colors are darker and desaturated to reduce eyestrain, but it’s meant to be faithful with vanilla Minecraft textures. It’s frequently updated by the developer and now has shader maps to improve the 3D modeling and textures of the pack itself!
For the players that prefer an improved version of Minecraft that still holds true to its roots, then Clarity is the resource pack for them. Clarity is a balance of realism and simplicity, while still holding true to Minecraft’s traditional design. Textures are given more detail, but clear in its intent to stay simplistic, hence the name. It’s a low impact resource pack, so anyone can add it and run the game smoothly.
Who doesn’t love a clear view out their window? With such wonderful sights to see now, get rid of those pesky glass streaks with Clear Glass! This pack has connected textures for both regular and stained-glass.
This pack achieves what we hadn’t expected. It adds a cartoon art style with unexpected depth to Minecraft. The CreatorPack is meant to revamp the appearance of Minecraft with smooth and detailed textures. They even have add-ons for better leaves and a grayscale GUI.
What makes this resource pack stand out is its detail while maintaining the pixel design of vanilla Minecraft. For anyone looking to take on adventures and explorations in the wide 1.18 world, check out Mythic!
Perhaps the shining star on this list, [xali’s Enhanced Vanilla] pack almost turns Minecraft into another game. While aiming to stay true to default textures, it utilizes Optifine to make things look more natural. With better transitions, alternate textures, and different modeling, players can feel like they’re connected to the world rather than simply thrust upon it.
Minecraft has plenty of potions and magic to satisfy its players. However, not many really delve into potion brewing like we did.
